Royal Northern Group of Hospitals
ANNUAL REPORT
FOR THE
* . ' g j, .• ‘ • . . j . -
Year Ending December 31st, 1946
It is with pleasure that the Board of Management present the
91st Annual Report of the work of the Royal Northern Group of
Hospitals.
The Board record, with a sense of deep gratitude, the continued
gracious interest taken in the Hospital by His Majesty the King, Her
Majesty Queen Mary and Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and
Duchess of Gloucester ; a visit to the Hospital by Her Royal Highness
the Duchess of Kent, in connection with the Alexandra Rose Day,
was a source of much pleasure both to Patients, Management and
Staff.
The increasing demands on the Hospital’s services, whilst
indicating its good record amongst the population of North London,
provide the Management with a problem concerning accommodation
which is almost insoluble in the present conditions of shortage of
materials, etc., for buildings or structural alterations.
The following figures show the number of Patients treated by
the Group during the year as compared with the previous year : —
1945 1946
In-Patients ... ... ... 6,444 6,693
New Out-Patients ... ... 68,964 72,042
Out-Patient Attendances ... 351,284 431,881
ST. DAVID’S WING FOR PRIVATE PATIENTS
This separate section continues to be of invaluable help to a
large number of Private Patients, not only resident in London but
also from the Country, and the rooms, both General and Maternity,
have been fully used throughout the year. 1,202 Patients were treated.
17
FINANCE
The list of subscriptions and donations show that the Board has
gratefully received a number of substantial gifts, and cordial thanks
are expressed to all supporters, including the following : —
£
King Edward’s Hospital Fund for London ... 10,700
Trustees of the Richard Cloudesley Charity ... 2,200
Hospitals Day Committee ... ... ... 1,015
Beecham’s Group, Ltd. (towards the mainten¬
ance of the Beecham Laboratories) ... ... 1,000
Metropolitan Hospital Sunday Fund ... ... 960
Alexandra Day ... ... ... ... ... 925
Arsenal Football Club ... ... ... 800
The Hon. Mrs. Eric Aldridge ... ... 785
Mrs. Warwick Bryant ... ... ... ... 393
Trustees of the late Aaron D. Sassoon ... 300
The Hospital Darts League ... ... ... 256
Walter Dunkels, Esq. ... ... ... ... 200
The Bernard Baron Charitable Trust ... ... 200
0
In addition to a grant of £10,700, King Edward’s Hospital
Fund very kindly indicated that they would provide a sum of £250
for research in connection with a special form of treatment with
Radon seeds and the Board gratefully acknowledge this recognition
of individual work which is being undertaken.
From the Contributory Schemes which have made payments
towards the cost of maintenance of their members whilst undergoing
treatment, the Hospital received and acknowledges with gratitude
the following amounts : —
Hospital Savings Association ... ... £15,524
Hospital Saturday Fund ... ... ... 1,987
The ordinary Income for Maintenance amounted to £158,238,
including £370 transferred from Legacies. The Income was £6,346
less than in the previous year. There was a deficiency of £48,987,
because the total Expenditure amounted to £207,225. The steep
rise in the cost of Hospital equipment and commodities, together with
new and substantially increased scales of salaries and wages for all
sections of the staff, resulted in £46,139 more having to be spent than
in 1945, although steps were taken to ensure that economy was
exercised in every Department. The extra Expenditure was also
partly due to there being 80,597 additional attendances of Out-Patients.
The accounts indicate that any difference between Income and Expen¬
diture of the Branches has been met by an apportionment of the re¬
quisite sums from the General Funds.
The value of the Hospital’s Endowments at the end of the year
was £109,649 and there were credits on various Special Funds, other
than Building Accounts, of £30,771.
«
18
The Building Fund increased by £3,399 and the Expenditure
on essential buildings amounted to £1,160.
At the close of the year the gross Debt amounted to £231,041.
Of this sum £183,026 was in respect of accumulated maintenance
deficiencies and £48,015 in respect of Land, Buildings and Equipment.
The Special Appeal Fund received gifts towards Maintenance
and Capital Accounts amounting to £2,729. The serious decline in
legacies, which fell from £10,649 in 1945 to £370 in 1946, and the
loss of many Subscribers and Donors from the list of Hospital sup¬
porters is attributable to the nationalisation of Hospitals and it must
be anticipated that still further losses will occur before the Hospitals
are formally taken over by the State. In the interim period, with the
growing Expenditure and the diminishing Income, the already serious
position of the Hospital will become more acute and an application
to the Government for assistance under the authority given by
Parliament for this purpose will become imperative.
CO-OPERATING ORGANISATIONS
The Board express their cordial thanks to all those who have
devoted themselves and their funds to the welfare of the Hospital
and the Patients, including : —
The Ladies’ League. *
The Ladies’ Association.
The League of Roses.
The Clergy, Ministers and Congregations of various Denomina¬
tions.
The donors of gifts in kind.
All Subscribers and Donors of money or voluntary service.
The Hospital Supply Depot and
All Working Parties.
BOARD OF MANAGEMENT
The death since the close of the year of Mr. Cuthbert Lake, who
joined the Board in 1917, is recorded with deep regret, and sympathy
is extended to his widow and family in their bereavement. Mr. Lake
also served as a member of the Finance Committee and was unstinting
in giving his professional advice in connection with the Hospital
Estate. Mr. Anthony Clapham has been elected to the vacancy.
HONORARY MEDICAL STAFF
Sincere thanks are accorded to all members of the Honorary
Medical and Surgical Staff for help to the Hospital and for their un¬
remitting professional assistance to, and personal interest in, the
Patients. As is only natural after a long war there have been a number
of changes in the Staff. It was with deep regret that the resignations
from the active Staff of Dr. Henry Semon, and Mr. Kenneth Walker
were received upon the expiration of their full terms of office and it
was a privilege to elect each of them to Emeritus rank.
19
Dr. Semon joined the Staff as Dermatologist and Venerealogist
in 1914. Mr. Kenneth Walker was elected as Surgeon and Urologist
in 1921 and the Governors owe to them a debt which cannot be
adequately expressed in words. Mr. Hamilton Bailey, one of the
Surgeons to the Hospital, has taken Mr. Kenneth Walker’s place.
Dr. Schlesinger, who joined the Staff as Physician and Paedia¬
trician in 1927, resigned upon election to another important office
elsewhere, and this vacancy has been filled by the transfer of Dr.
Bruce Williamson who is already on the staff. The Board are very
grateful to Dr. Schlesinger for all that he has done for the Children’s
Department, and have elected him as Consulting Paediatrician.
The Board have elected the following gentlemen, to each of
whom a warm welcome is accorded : —
Raymond Greene, Esq., M.A., D.M., M.R.C.P. — Physician.
J. J. Owen, Esq., M.R.C.P. — Dermatologist.
Alan Small, Esq., M.B., F.R.C.S. — Surgeon.
Henry Hobbs, Esq., M.B., F.R.C.S., D.O.M.S. — Ophthalmic
Surgeon (2nd).
Dr. James Marshall has been appointed Senior' Medical Officer
of the Venereal Diseases Department.
CHAPLAINS, RESIDENT MEDICAL, NURSING, MID¬
WIFERY ADMINISTRATIVE, HOUSEKEEPING AND
OTHER STAFFS
The year has been an extremely difficult one demanding very hard
work and untiring efforts of all sections of the Hospital’s Staff in
maintaining a high standard of work during times of shortage of
personnel. The Board recognise with admiration these devoted
services which have contributed so much to the welfare of the Patients
and to the good repute of the Hospital.
ROYAL CHEST HOSPITAL
The work carried on for Out-Patients under difficult conditions
in the remains of the bombed Hospital has continued to be of great
value and 36,028 attendances were made at the various Clinics which
include 11,977 at the Almeric Page Massage Clinic. The Board are
much concerned that efforts to secure suitable accommodation for
In-Patients in place of the Wards destroyed have so far proved
ineffective. Cordial thanks are extended to the Hertfordshire County
Council and the Medical Superintendent and Staff of Wellhouse
Hospital, Barnet, who have continued to give hospitality to many
patients who required In-Patient care. Mr. H. M. A. Siddons has
been elected to the vacant office of Thoracic Surgeon (Second).
The income for the year was £6,749 and the Expenditure £8,321.
GROVELANDS HOSPITAL, SOUTHGATE
The accommodation available at Grovelands Hospital for those
Patients in the first stages of recovery after operation has proved of
20
inestimable value in releasing beds at the parent Hospital for the
admission of urgent and emergency cases. During the year 1,023
patients were admitted. The income amounted to £5,635, while the
expenditure was £9,681.
RECKITT CONVALESCENT HOME, CLACTON
It was with pleasure that the Board were in a position to re-open
this Section in December upon de-requisition by the Military Authori¬
ties. The Board were glad that Mrs. Cooke, the former Matron, was
free to resume her duties. The income was £437 and the expenditure
£792.
MATERNITY WARDS AND JOINT MIDWIFERY TRAINING
SCHOOL (Part I)
826 expectant mothers were admitted to the Wards, 9,948 attend¬
ances were made at the Ante-Natal and Post-Natal Clinics. 46 pupils
were accepted for Part I training of the Central Midwives Board
examination of whom 41 were successful.
*
MATERNITY NURSING ASSOCIATION AND PART II
TRAINING SCHOOL
1,695 mothers were attended during confinement in their own
homes. 22,054 visits to homes were made by Midwives and Pupils.
There were 17,220 attendances at the Ante-Natal, Post-Natal and
Children’s Welfare Clinics, 68 pupils were received for Part II training,
of whom 64 were successful in satisfying the Examiners.
The Association continued to staff Maternity Homes at Locking-
ton Hall, Leicestershire (45 beds) and at Hitchin, Hertfordshire
(48 beds), on behalf of the Ministry of Health, and arrangements
have also been made to assist the Hertfordshire County Council by
organising and staffing a Maternity Unit at Welwyn Garden City.
In London the Domiciliary Service has been extended by the opening
of a further Centre in Highbury Crescent in the house so generously
bequeathed by the late Miss M. F. Roby.
Cordial thanks and appreciation are expressed to Miss E. Tindall
who, in addition to her manifold activities as Matron of the Associa¬
tion, has now also been appointed Matron of the City of London
Maternity Hospital.
A full account of the work of the Maternity Nursing Association
is contained in a separate report.
RADIOTHERAPY CENTRE
Progress has been made during the year by the development of a
joint scheme of co-operation in Radiotherapy treatment between the
Royal Northern and the Prince of Wales’ Hospitals by pooling the
resources of the two Hospitals and by arranging an interchange of
the medical and other professional staffs so that the patients in the
north of London needing this form of treatment can have access to
21
a larger range of expensive equipment, and the engagement of whole¬
time Radiotherapists, Physicists, etc., has become justified in the
combined Centre. By this means concentration on the treatment of
cancer, and its essential record-keeping and follow-up work, has
been intensified as well as the study and development of treatment
for other forms of disease coming within the scope of Radiotherapy.
An anonymous loan of £1,900, free of interest, has been received to
help this work forward.
NATIONAL HEALTH ACT
The National Health Act has now become law and Governors
will know that under its provisions Hospitals will be taken over
next year by the State. It is as well to mention here that in the case
of the Royal Northern gross assets to the value of about £1,000,000
in Endowments, Lands, Buildings and Equipment will be handed
over to the Government. The introduction of the Act will lead to
far-reaching changes in the method of management of the Voluntary
Hospitals. Although this great alteration in the organisation of the
Hospital services of the country is viewed with grave concern by
many people it is to be hoped that the support and interest of all those
who have so willingly given voluntary services and financial help
in the past will still be forthcoming and that by means of the loyal
service, co-operation and valuable experience of some members of
Boards of Management, Hospital Officers and Staff who remain under
the new regime the services available to the sick and injured may
continue unimpaired and that patients may still receive that individual
sympathy and interest which has always characterised the Voluntary
Hospital System.
CONCLUSION
The Board are proud of the Hospital’s record of 91 years of
efficient and progressive services to the sick and its share in the training
of Medical Men, Nurses and Midwives and other professional staffs,
and they extend their thanks to all those in this Country and from
Overseas who have, by their work and gifts, enabled these services
to be efficiently maintained and enlarged.
There is still a year before the change of ownership takes place
and the Board are anxious, in the interests of the patients and the people
of the Country generally, to hand over an Organisation in as good a
state of efficiency as possible. To do this they must still have the help
of the subscribers and donors who have so loyally built up the Royal
Northern Group of Hospitals and they appeal most earnestly to every¬
body to continue their generous support.
July, 1947. ' {Signed) BESSBOROUGH, Chairman.

We have examined the foregoing Balance Sheet, and we certify that it is
correct, and that the Investments therein set out were standing either in the
name of the Royal Northern Hospital or the Great Northern Central Hospi¬
tal. We have checked the deeds of the properties and obtained certificates in
respect of the deeds lodged as security for loans. We have also verified the
balances at the Bankers. To the best of our knowledge and belief the Regu¬
lations of the Revised Uniform System as modified by the Circular of King
Edward’s Hospital Fund relating to the treatment of Free Legacies dated
December, 1940 have been followed.

Note. — It is customary at most Hospitals for the recovery of patients to be provided for in the
main Hospital. At the Royal Northern Hospital, patients are transferred to the Grove-
lands Hospital at Southgate. The statistical figures of the Royal Northern Hospital
alone do not, consequently, show a complete comparison with other Hospitals, and this
schedule is published for the information of supporters of the Hospital, to show the
result of the combination of the figures of the Grovelands Hospital with those of the two
other Hospitals of the Group to which it belongs. These figures are comparable with
those of other General Hospitals.

For Convalescence we are now able to use again the Reckitt
Home, Clacton, which was re-opened on 7th November after having
been closed for the war years. For patients whom the East Coast
does not suit, we shall continue to use Homes in other districts as
accommodation becomes available. During the past year 12 patients
were sent to the Reckitt Home and 101 patients to other Convalescent
Homes.
Other problems for which patients are referred are many and
varied. Some we are able to solve but others are almost insoluble.
Home Helps for the old, and nursing facilities for the chronic sick
are a pressing need as yet only partially fulfilled.
Transport to Hospital by Hospital Car Service is needed more
than ever before as pressure on beds becomes greater, necessitating
the treatment as Out-Patients of those who would in former times
have been admitted. This has incurred a considerable expense to the
Hospital although patients contribute towards the cost according to
their circumstances.
The following figutes relate to the outside agencies with whom
we are in touch concerning the welfare of the patients : —
Children referred to The Invalid Children’s Aid Association ... 83
Patients referred to Family Welfare Association ... ... 62
Patients referred to Medical Officers of Health ... ... 200

ANNUAL REPORT, 1946

(These totals include In-Patients, Out-Patients’ and Private
Patients’ treatments, also those at Grovelands Hospital.)
Staffing problems have become easier during 1946. Extra Staff
is now available for Ward treatments, and we were able to recommence
treatment at Grovelands Hospital in November, 1946.
The Women’s Evening Clinic, which was started as a war-time
measure, has been closed for a month or two as there are fewer
women in industry, but it is ready to be re-opened as soon as required.
The Men’s Evening Clinic has been carried on throughout the year
and is well attended and greatly appreciated.

The number of investigations made by the Pathological Depart¬
ments in the year 1946 (the first full year after cessation of hostilities)
is no less than 50 per cent, above the last full year before the outbreak
of war.
This is conclusive evidence of the increasing use now being
made of facilities for pathological investigations, and is by no means
an indication, even, that we are approaching the maximum. The
scope of the laboratory is ever increasing and the pace is getting
faster.

NORTHERN TUBERCULOSIS DISPENSARY
REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1946
There was a continued steep rise of over 1,200 in the numbers
attending the Dispensary during the year.
New cases of Tuberculosis rose by only 4 from the previous
year but 31 Contacts were found to be Tuberculous out of the 534
examined. This may be compared with 14 out of a total of 558
examined last year.
The housing conditions and the inadequacy of hospital accommo¬
dation for Patients suffering from Tuberculosis continue to make the
struggle against this disease a difficult and disturbing business.

ROYAL CHEST HOSPITAL
SOUTHERN TUBERCULOSIS DISPENSARY
REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1946
The past year has been rather difficult, particularly perhaps as
to the admission of patients to Hospital and Sanatorium. In not a
few cases patients have had to remain at home for a number of weeks,
pending a vacancy. Fortunately, a majority of these had not suffered
to any great extent. In many instances, one is glad to report, improve¬
ment has been steady and continuous so that Institutional treatment
became unnecessary. After a reasonable time a number have been
able to resume their occupations, or obtain suitable work, either full
or part time.
Priority Milk, Maintenance Allowances and Good Housekeeping
have contributed in no small degree to these happy results.

ROYAL NORTHERN HOSPITAL
League of the Roses
FOREWORD
What can I write of our efforts for yeau 1946, now ended? We
experienced, as did similar organisations — without a doubt — great
difficulty in obtaining the usual support from public to our several
ways and means of raising funds for League of Roses Ward, due to
contemplated State control of Hospitals, which we understand will
take place in July, 1948. We have nevertheless tried to carry on as
usual and endeavoured to overcome the seemingly lack of interest
of general public.
Whatever is to happen in July, 1948, can in no way heal and
bring back to health the many thousands of folk who, through accident
or ill health, need the attention of Hospital services during this interim
period. Accidents and illness, alas — as we all so well understand —
require immediate treatment now and cannot await a date in year 1948.
All League Members, and I feel I can include all who attended
our week at Derry’s Gardens, loaned to us through the great kindness
of Messrs. Derry & Toms, Ltd., Kensington High Street, W.8,
thoroughly enjoyed — would indeed be difficult not to — -the truly
magnificent and wonderful beauty of these Gardens. No less a sum
than £422 was taken during our week — a splendid result and most
gratifying. My sincere thanks to all who made this result possible.
Messrs. Derry & Toms have promised us the use of the
Garden in 1947. Can we beat the 1946 result? We shall have a
good try.
My thanks to our many friends, League Committee and Members
for their continued interest and appreciated support in helping to
maintain the League of Roses Ward.
ELSIE J. BARRATT, Chairman .

At the Institutions forming the Royal Northern Group
of Hospitals (as at other Hospitals) patients are now
asked to pay part of the cost of their treatment according
to their means. The introduction of this system has
naturally led to requests for exemption from past and
present supporters of the Hospital. To meet this just
demand for
VALUE FOR MONEY
the Contributors’ Certificate Scheme was started, by which
contributors may receive Certificates in exchange for
money given to or collected for the Hospital. They are
of seven values, *21/-, *10/6, *5/-, 2/6, 1/-, 6d. and 3d.,
and are accepted at their face value towards the cost of
any treatment which the Bearer may need.
SIX REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD CO-OPERATE
ONE :
You will help the Hospital, and at the same time
HELP YOURSELF.
TWO:
The Certificates will be accepted as payment at any
of the Hospitals of the Royal Northern Group, at the
Mildmay Memorial Hospital or the Hornsey Central
Hospital.
THREE :
They will help to provide you with medical and
surgical appliances, dentures, etc., if needed in con¬
nection with your treatment.
FOUR :
They are valid for Ten Years (those marked with a *
are valid for 20 years), and will therefore help you to
make provision against a rainy day.
FIVE :
They can be passed on for use by your friends, so that
you will be in a position to lend a helping hand in
time of sickness.
SIX
They afford you a simple method of giving a small but
regular amount to the Hospital, and provide you with
tangible advantages in exchange.
Further particulars of this interesting and beneficial
scheme can be obtained from The Secretary, Royal
Northern Hospital, Holloway Road, N.7.
